Robert White (born September 21, 1926 in Melrose , Massachusetts , † January 13, 2015 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American diplomat . He was ambassador to various US governments and since 2008 chairman of the Center for International Policy .

Life

From 1977 to 1980 White was ambassador to Paraguay . He was then ambassador to El Salvador from 1980 to 1981 . He was considered a critic of the US government's policy towards El Salvador at the time, which was primarily characterized by support for right-wing circles and the military. In 1981 White retired and became a member of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace .

According to a telegram from 1978, which became known through a FoIA request from the New York Times , Robert White had learned in a conversation with General Alejandro Fretes Dávalos, the chief of staff of the Armed Forces of Paraguay , that the South American countries involved in Operation Condor were a US communications system used in the Panama Canal Zone. In addition, all Latin American armed forces took part in the covert operation .

White died of complications from cancer on January 13, 2015 in Arlington, Virginia at the age of 88.
