Roberto Azevedo

Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo (born October 3, 1957 in Salvador da Bahia ) is a Brazilian diplomat and has been Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) since September 1, 2013 . He replaced the French Pascal Lamy , who had held this post since 2005.

Azevêdo studied electrical engineering at the Universidade de Brasília , later international relations at the Instituto Rio Branco , the training institute of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 1984 he joined the Brazilian diplomatic service. Between 1988 and 1991 he worked at the Embassy in Washington DC, 1992–1994 at the Embassy in Montevideo and from 1997 to 2001 at the Permanent Mission of Brazil in Geneva. From 2008 to 2013 he was the permanent representative of Brazil to the WTO. Previously, he was head of the economic department in the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs . He will step down from his position on August 31, 2020.
