The robust ghost pipefish ( Solenostomus cyanopterus ), also called seagrass ghost pipefish , lives in the Red Sea and in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa to the Fiji Islands, north to southern Japan and south to Australia .

features

The species is variably colored brown, pink or yellow with small black and white spots. There are two elongated black spots between the first three hard rays of the dorsal fin. Adult fish reach a length of ten centimeters. There are 24 to 26 vertebrae. The body is protected by 27 to 35 bone plates.

Fin formula : dorsal V / 17-22, anal 17-22.

The caudal fin is spade-shaped or rounded, the caudal fin stalk is short, in large females it disappears completely. The pelvic fins of the females are transformed into a brood pouch for the clutch.

Way of life

The fish initially live pelagic and only move to the ground-based life in order to reproduce. They then live at depths of up to 25 meters along reefs near the coast. The robust ghost pipefish is monogamous and always found in pairs. As with all ghost pipefish, the females form a brood pouch with their pelvic fins and carry the eggs around with them until the young fish hatch. They feed on small crustaceans.
