history

Flower market at Rochusmarkt in the 19th century

The St. Nicholas Monastery has been located in the immediate vicinity of today's Rochusmarkt since the early 13th century . This was burned down in the course of the first Turkish siege in 1529, the remaining ruins were removed a few years later. In 1538 King Ferdinand I handed over the area to the city of Vienna for the construction of a cemetery. The St. Nikolai cemetery served as a suburban cemetery for almost 250 years; a cemetery chapel was built in 1698, which was finally replaced by a baroque church of St. Nicholas completed in 1745 . When all the cemeteries within the line wall had to be closed due to the Josephine reforms , the remains of those buried here were exhumed in 1784 at the St. Nikolai cemetery and transferred to the newly created Sankt Marxer Friedhof , including those by the sculptor Georg Raphael Donner .

The now fallow land soon developed into a market square, which was named Augustinermarkt from 1786 in reference to the nearby Augustinian monastery . It was originally a pure flower market, but changed to a food market and thus became an important local supply center for the district.

In 1984, as part of the construction of underground line 3, the market had to move a few meters closer to the Rochuskirche. Most of the buildings that were already desolate were demolished and temporary market stalls were erected next to the church. On August 25, 1988 31 new and uniformly designed stands at the original location of the market were able to resume operations.

Since the name Rochusmarkt had been established in common parlance for a long time due to the Rochus Church opposite , this became its official name after the market reopened.
