Rock city (club)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rock City is a music club of the alternative music scene in Nottingham , Nottinghamshire , United Kingdom .

history

Before the building was used for musical events, the World Professional Charts Championship took place there two years earlier . In 1980 The Undertones played the first official concert at Rock City. Originally, a performance by Iron Maiden was planned for the opening of the music club, but this was canceled in advance due to several complications. Iron Maiden only appeared in Rock City in 1996.

In 1982 the equipment of the Rock City was renewed. A new sound system, two video screens and lighting were installed. Concerts with Ozzy Osborne and The Pogues were sold out. However, the musical program in the early years was cross-genre, so that Public Enemy also played in the music club. When the alternative music scene changed, the musical framework program was designed accordingly. When the grunge wave gained popularity in the early 1990s, Rage Against the Machine and Nirvana also played in Rock City. Something similar happened with the advent of Britpop , so that Blur and Oasis also made appearances in the music club.

At the turn of the millennium, the operators began again to organize several events spanning various musical styles, so that dance and drum and bass festivals were held on selected days . The first band without a record deal to manage to play a sold out concert at Rock City was English folk punk / ska band Ferocious Dog in November 2015.

In January 2013, Nottinghamshire Police announced that 10 percent of pickpockets were committed in Rock City between September 2011 and August 2012. Bart Easter, manager of the music club, said this was due to organized gang crime.
