Rock the Casbah ( Hebrew רוק בקסבה) is a 2012 Israeli drama film directed by Yariv Horowitz .

action

Rock the Casbah is set in 1989, at the time of the first Intifada . He describes the life of the growing Israeli soldier Tomer ( Yon Tumarkin ) and his army unit in the Middle East conflict . When a member of his squad ( Henry David ) is killed, Tomer is one of four men chosen by the commandant to carry out a surveillance operation. That's how they want to catch the perpetrator. Tomer has mixed feelings about the assignment. He is raised by his comrades because he plays with Arab children who his comrades refer to as “little terrorists ”. However, since the soldiers are less popular with the Arab population in the area, it is becoming increasingly difficult for Tomer to be friendly to them. And it soon becomes clear that the war will change Tomer too.

background

The script for Rock the Casbah was written by Guy Meirson and Yariv Horowitz. Yariv Horowitz also directed. The film is supposed to show the effects of the war on the psyche of those involved. It is supposed to show the pointlessness of armed actions that always provoke new injustice.

In Germany, the film was shown in the original with subtitles at the International Film Festival in Berlin and some German cinemas. It also ran on German television in April 2015.

There is a Hebrew, English and French language DVD release.

Reviews

Jordan Hoffman of Film.com described the film as worth seeing and worth discussing. Rock the Casbah describes how complicated and difficult to resolve this conflict is. Hoffman gave the film 7.3 out of 10 points. However, Screen Daily 's Dan Fainaru stated that while the film is an accurate portrait of an ongoing tragedy, the film has more color and oomph than it actually goes into depth. Alissa Simon of Variety magazine adds that the film doesn't offer viewers anything they haven't seen before.
