The Rocky Mountaineer is a railway company founded in 1990 in Vancouver , Canada , which today offers 45 train and package tours on five routes through the Canadian Rockies and Alberta .

Development of the company

The company was founded in 1990, and train services began in the same year. From 1991 onwards, the company's rail adventure trips have been recognized several times by the specialist magazine The International Railway Traveler and also by the World Travel Awards .

In 1999, a 41-car Rocky Mountaineer train was the longest passenger train in Canada to date. In 2002 the company registered the 500,000. Traveler, the millionth in 2008. Since 2006, two more connections have been offered from Vancouver to Whistler and from Whistler to Jasper in the province of Alberta. In 2010 the rail vehicles were modernized. In 2013 a fifth route from Vancouver to Seattle will be added.

The Rocky Mountaineer operates on five routes:

  • First Passage to the West between Vancouver and Banff or Calgary ,
  • Journey through the Clouds from Vancouver via Kamloops to Jasper ,
  • Rainforest to Gold Rush from Vancouver via Whistler and Quesnel to Jasper,
  • Whistler Sea to Sky Climb from Vancouver to Whistler and
  • Coastal Passage from Seattle via Vancouver to the Canadian Rockies.

The Rocky Mountaineer has 75 locomotives and wagons. These include diesel locomotives of the types EMD F40PH and EMD GP40-2L , which come from the Canadian National Railway . There are 48 passenger coaches, 16 of which are double-decker coaches with panoramic glass roofs.

For the 2018/2019 season, the Berlin manufacturer Stadler (Stadler Pankow GmbH) delivered ten luxurious GoldLeaf 3.0 panorama coaches that had been developed and built since 2015. They are equipped with curved panorama windows that can be electrically darkened on the upper deck and have extensive air conditioning, elevators and restaurant kitchens.

The closest airports are Calgary Airport and Vancouver International Airport . In Vancouver, the trains depart from a dedicated terminal in the immediate vicinity of Pacific Central Station . Other companies' trains run from either Pacific Central Station ( Amtrak and Via Rail ) or the Waterfront Station ( TransLink ).
