Roderic Alfred "Rod" Gregory (born December 29, 1913 in London ; † September 5, 1990 in Liverpool ) was a British physiologist at the University of Liverpool , who is best known for his work on gastrin .

Live and act

Gregory obtained a BSc in Physiology from University College London in 1934 , and graduated from there in 1939 with a degree in medicine. He was a postdoctoral fellow with Andrew Ivy at Northwestern University in Chicago on gastrointestinal physiology . In 1941, Gregory received a lectureship in physiology at University College, at the same time he worked for the Ministry of Supply on chemical warfare . He later received a position as Senior Lecturer in Experimental Physiology at the University of Liverpool and in 1948 a full professorship there. In 1981 he retired.

Gregory made a contribution to the elucidation of the biological activity and structure of peptide hormones . Together with George Wallace Kenner , he clarified the structure of gastrin and synthesized it. He was able to show similarities in gastrin in different species and that it shares the five C-terminal amino acids with cholecystokinin . It has also been shown that gastrin is the substance that mediates the symptoms of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome . Together with Graham Dockray , he developed a radioimmunoassay for the detection of gastrin. Gregory's late work looked at the effects of gastrin and other peptide hormones on the brain and enteric nervous system .

Rod Gregory became a member of the Royal Society in 1965 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1980 . In 1966 he received the Feldberg Foundation Prize , the Royal Medal in 1978 and the International Antonio Feltrinelli Prize in 1979 . In 1971 he became Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Gregory was married and had a daughter.
