Rod Serling

Edwin Rodman Serling (born December 25, 1924 in Syracuse , New York , † June 28, 1975 in Rochester ) was an American screenwriter , playwright , film producer and presenter who mainly worked for television.

Life

Serling was born to Esther Cooper and Samuel Lawrence Serling, a Jewish family. Serling's father had worked as a secretary and amateur inventor before he was a child, but took over his father-in-law's job as a grocer to earn a steady income. His mother was a housewife. Serling also had an older brother, Robert J. Serling.

From 1943 to 1946 he served on the Pacific Front as a parachutist, where he was wounded several times and received awards. After the war he began studying sports, but quickly switched to language and literature. While still a student, Serling worked for a local radio station as a writer, actor and director. Serling married Carolyn Louise Kramer in 1948. After graduating, Serling continued to work as a permanent writer for a radio station.

His breakthrough came in 1955 with Patterns , a script for television, for which Serling received the first of his six Emmys . He now switched to film and television, where he wrote mainly for MGM and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) . Rod Serling is best known as the producer and writer of the mystery television series Twilight Zone , which he also hosted. After the series ran out in 1965, he wrote episodes for the series Rod Serling's Night Gallery and received other Emmy nominations.

In addition to his work for television, Serling has also worked as a screenwriter for several cinema productions. So he wrote u. a. the scripts for the political thriller Seven Days in May (1964), the adventure film Assault on the Queen Mary (1966) and the science fiction film Planet of the Apes (1968).

After his television career, Serling returned to Antioch College and took up teaching there. Politically active, Serling was involved in the 1960s and 1970s against the Vietnam War .

Serling died on June 28, 1975 during bypass surgery .

In 2008 he was posthumously inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
