Roderich D. Süssmuth (born March 6, 1971 ) is a German chemist, biochemist and professor at the Technical University of Berlin .

Life

Roderich Süssmuth was born in Tübingen in 1971. He studied chemistry and biochemistry from 1990 to 1996 at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen , then he did his doctorate in 1999 with Günther Jung in Tübingen on the subject of isolation, structure elucidation and synthesis of microbial metabolites from Amycolatopsis mediterranei, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptomyces lividans .

During a postdoctoral stay at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, United States, from 2000 to 2001 he worked on catalytically active antibodies and organocatalysis . This was followed by a habilitation in chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Tübingen. Since 2004 he has been Professor of Biological Chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin .

Since June 1, 2019, Roderich Süßmuth has been the spokesman for the Graduate School "Bioactive Peptides - Innovative Aspects of Synthesis and Biosynthesis ( RTG 2473 )".

Since 2016 he has been on the scientific advisory board of Pentracor GmbH (Hennigsdorf), which develops new forms of therapy for heart attack patients and for the treatment of autoimmune diseases.

In 2020 he became editor of the journal "RSC Chemical Biology".

During his career, Roderich Süßmuth worked in the field of peptide synthesis , examining current issues from a chemical point of view ( natural product synthesis ) as well as from a biological point of view with regard to new classes of active ingredients, particularly those with activity against fungi, bacteria and viruses. He clarified the structure of the antibacterial albicidin, examined its biosynthesis and developed the total synthesis of the peptide. This research is an important basis for new medical applications, including therapy against resistant bacteria in humans and animals.

Süßmuth has received numerous prizes and awards. Among other things, the Society for Chemical Technology and Biotechnology honored him in 2003 with the Young Scientist Prize for Natural Product Research.
