Scripps Research
Scripps Research , formerly the Scripps Research Institute , is a medical research facility with a focus on biomedicine and chemistry . It has existed in its current form since 1993; however, its predecessor organizations go back to 1924. The science magazine Nature ranked it 29th in its ranking of the world's most important biomedical research institutions in 2019.
organization
The institute, headquartered in La Jolla , California ( Scripps Florida second seat in Jupiter , Florida ) houses approximately 3,000 scientists, technicians, doctoral students and administrative employees, making it one of the largest private and not-for-profit biomedical research organizations in the world. It has departments in cell biology , chemistry , immunology , molecular biology , experimental medicine , neurobiology, and neuroscience . Michael A. Marletta has been President since 2012 , and Richard A. Lerner since 1987 .
The following facilities are affiliated with the institute:
- The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology
- The Pearson Center for Alcoholism and Addiction Research
- The Harold L. Dorris Neurological Research Center
- The Helen L. Dorris Child and Adolescent Neuro-Psychiatric Disorder Institute
- The Institute for Childhood and Neglected Diseases
- The Center for Integrative Molecular Biosciences
It offers graduate fellowships in biology , biophysics , biochemistry, and chemistry at the Kellogg School of Science and Technology.
The institute is often associated with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography , affiliated with the University of California, San Diego . Although both institutions are close together, they are independent of one another.
The institute was the initiator of the Predictor @ home project in the field of distributed computing .
history
On 11 December 1924 the established philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps in La Jolla , the Scripps Metabolic Clinic for diagnosis, treatment and research of diabetes and other metabolic diseases . At the beginning of its existence, the clinic was part of the Scripps Memorial Hospital founded in September of the same year . Ellen Browning Scripps' death in 1932 she left the clinic 300.0000 US dollars for research purposes.
In 1946 the clinic became independent from Scripps Memorial Hospital , and much of the funding was devoted to building a research laboratory and hiring biomedical researchers. In the years that followed, several new departments were established, including gastroenterology , allergies , clinical immunology , experimental pathology and microbiology .
In 1956 the Metabolic Clinic was renamed the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation . In 1977 the clinic's research programs were merged into the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic . In 1993 the Scripps Research Institute was separated from Scripps Health and became an independent organization.
In 2001, Barry Sharpless , who worked for Scripps, received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on stereoselective oxidation reactions; a year later Kurt Wüthrich , who also works as a professor at the Scripps Research Institute , was honored with the award for his developments in the structural analysis of biological macromolecules using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy .
In 2003, Scripps Research announced plans to open a Florida State and local government funded facility in Palm Beach County . The site in Jupiter, Florida was inaugurated in 2009.
