Roeland Pieterszoon Paardekooper (born March 17, 1970 in Eindhoven ) is a Dutch archaeologist .

Life

Paardekooper is the son of Petrus Cornelis Jozef Maria Paardekooper, professor of language studies. From 1997 he studied archeology at the University of Leiden, specializing in European prehistory . In 2012, he received his PhD from the University of Exeter on archaeological open air museums .

From 1981 he worked at the Historisch Openluchtmuseum Eindhoven . As part of the EU project liveARCH , he published numerous articles on archaeological open-air museums. The subject of this project was the professionalization of the archaeological open-air museums in eight countries. Paardekooper was also significantly involved in the design of the follow-up project OpenArch . In addition, Paardekooper is co-founder and current director of EXARC, an international association of international open-air museums and experimental archaeologists . The association has more than 120 members from around 25 countries and is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) .

From the beginning of October 2013 to May 2016, Paardekooper was director of the Archaeological Open-Air Museum in Oerlinghausen .

In September 2015, Paardekooper received the Museum Horizon Award from the intercontinental museum network SAMP for its contribution to the professionalization of archaeological open-air museums in the areas of financial management, interpretation and public relations .

Services

Between 1995 and 2003, Paardekooper played a key role in the expansion of the world shop in Leidener Burgsteeg, for which he was honored in April 2012 by the city of Eindhoven. As the youngest decorated in the province of North Brabant in 2012, Paardekooper was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau .
