history

ROFIN was founded in 1975 in Hamburg as SINAR Laser Systeme Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH. Sinar is Sanskrit for light beam , but the name was already used by a Swiss company. With the takeover of the British company rofin, it changed its name to ROFIN-SINAR Laser GmbH.

In the early 1980s, the development and production of our own lasers began in Hamburg. In 1985 the move to Japan followed with a joint venture with the Marubeni company. In 1987 Siemens took over 100 percent of Rofin-Sinar. Siemens supplemented the acquisition in 1988 with the purchase of the industrial division of the American laser pioneer Spectra-Physics , when it was sold to Ciba-Geigy , and in 1989 with the German Laser Optronic , which was then manufacturing laser marking technology.

As the first wholly owned spin-off from Siemens, the company went to the American technology exchange NASDAQ (abbreviation: RSTI) in 1996. The company has also been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (Prime Standard) since July 2001 and was listed in the TecDAX selection index from March 2004 to March 2010.

In the years after the first listing on the stock exchange, the strategy of growth through acquisitions to expand the markets technologically and geographically continued. A large number of brands were united under the umbrella of the Rofin-Sinar Group.
