Roger Lallemand

Roger Lallemand (born January 17, 1932 in Quevaucamps , Hainaut , Belgium , † October 20, 2016 ) was a Belgian lawyer and politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS) . He was President of the Belgian Senate for a short time in 1988 .

biography

After attending school, Lallemand first studied philology and graduated with a licentiate . Another study of law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles , he finished with the promotion of Doctor of Law . After his admission, he began practicing as a lawyer in Brussels in 1958 .

His political career began late with his election as a member of the Senate , to which he was a representative of the Parti Socialiste from 1979 to 1999. Between March 10 and May 10, 1988, he was brief president of the Senate.

On April 3, 1990, together with Lucienne Herman-Michielsens , a senator of the Partij voor Vrijheid en Vooruitgang (PVV), he presented a bill that legalized an abortion under certain circumstances . With the necessary majority, the Federal Parliament passed the necessary amendments to Articles 348, 350, 351 and 352 of the Criminal Code and the introduction of Article 353 into the Criminal Code, thereby creating one of the least restrictive abortion rights in the world at the time.

After leaving the Senate, he received the title of Honorary President (Erevoorzitter van de Senaat). On January 28, 2002, he was also awarded the honorary title of Minister of State (Minister van Staat) along with several other politicians . As a result, he was also a member of the Crown Council (Kroonraad), which had not been convened since 1960 .

Lallemand was also a member of the Masonic Lodge Les Amis Philanthropes, which belongs to the Grand Lodge Grootoosten van België .
