Roger Mullin

Roger Mullin (born March 12, 1948 ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Mullin was born in 1948. He studied sociology at Edinburgh University and graduated in 1977 with a master's degree . He later earned a Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering. In the decades that followed, Mullin lectured at various institutions including the University of Edinburgh and the Open University . Since 2001 he has been an honorary professor at the University of Stirling .

Furthermore, Mullin is also active internationally as a freelance consultant in the field of education, including for the United Nations and various governments. In addition to numerous articles in specialist publications, he wrote a monthly column for an extended period in the educational supplement of the Scottish edition of the Times .

Political career

For the first time Mulin appeared in the general election in October 1974 for elections at the national level. In his constituency of South Ayrshire , however, he was unable to prevail against incumbent Labor MP Jim Sillars on election day . Despite winning votes, he missed the entry into the British House of Commons in the following elections in 1979 in the same constituency one more time. In the constituency of Kirkcaldy , Mullin received the lowest share of the four candidates in the 1987 general election.

After the death of the deputy of the constituency Paisley North , Allen Adams , were needed in this constituency in 1990 elections. The SNP set up Mullin for these. Although he was able to increase the result for the SNP by 16.5% compared to the previous elections, he was defeated by the Labor candidate and widow of the deceased, Irene Adams . In the following elections in 1992 , he could not win the majority in the same constituency.

In the first elections to the Scottish Parliament in 1999 , Mullin ran for the SNP in the constituency of Ayr . However, he only received the third highest number of votes. At the general election in 2015 Mullin joined in the constituency Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath at. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown had held its mandate since its introduction in 2005. However, he did not run for these elections. With the massive increase in votes of the SNP in these elections, Mullin won the mandate with a share of the vote of 52.2% and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the early general election in 2017 , Mullin lost his mandate with a difference of only 259 votes to Labor candidate Lesley Laird and subsequently left the House of Commons.
