from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roger C. Schank (* 1946 ) is an American cognitive scientist , computer scientist and educator.

Life

Schank received his PhD in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin with Jacob Mey (A Conceptual Dependency Representation for a Computer-Oriented Semantics) in 1969 , was Assistant Professor of Linguistics and Computer Science at Stanford University, and was Professor of Computer Science and Psychology from 1974 to 1989 at Yale University , where he led the artificial intelligence project there. He was Chief Education Officer on Carnegie Mellon University's West Coast campus , where he founded the Center for the Learning Sciences. Afterwards he was professor of computer science, education and psychology at Northwestern University until his retirement , where he founded the Institute for the Learning Sciences (ILS) in 1989 .

He was visiting professor at the University of Paris VII.

In the 1970s and 1980s he made innovative contributions to the research of artificial intelligence , in particular with his concepts of Case-Based Reasoning , Script and Dynamic Memory . Traditional approaches in cognitive research were based on a rule-based manipulation of symbols . Schank, on the other hand, postulated a memory model that is organized in the form of meaningful episodes. Learning and problem solving can be mapped in this model as processes that use exemplary cases stored in the memory.

In 1994 Schank founded the company Cognitive Arts, which develops multimedia applications for computer-aided education. In 2002, Socratic Arts was founded, an e-learning provider. He has also written numerous books on the subject of learning, language, artificial intelligence, training, e-learning, etc.

He founded the Cognitive Science Society and co-founded the cognitive science journal Journal of Cognitive Science .
