Kingsport is an American city in Tennessee . It is located in Sullivan County and partially extends into Hawkins County . It is part of the Tri-Cities, TN , along with Johnson City and Bristol . In 2016, 52,806 people lived in an area of around 116.6 km 2 .

Kingsport is located in northeast Tennessee. In the east of the city, the North Fork Holston River and South Fork Holston River unite to form the Holston River . In the city, Interstate 26 / US Highway 23 and US Highway 11W intersect .
history
Since 1822, the city has been one of the most important shipping ports on the Holston River . Many goods were transported over many miles for shipping to Kingsport. From there they were shipped on freighters on the Tennessee River and sold there. Kingsport lost this position as an important trading port in the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1916 the place was the scene of a serious accident with a circus elephant , which killed a person and led to the public execution of the animal.
In 1917 Kingsport was re-established in a way. In the mid-1920s, it was one of the first cities to receive a modern cityscape and to be modernized. Furthermore, Kingsport was one of the first cities to receive a city council that corresponded to the form of government. A school system newly developed at Columbia University was introduced here for the first time. The chemical company Eastman Chemical , founded in 1920, has its headquarters in Kingsport to this day.
