Life

Sir Roger belonged to the influential society in Wiltshire and was sheriff in the county in 1463/64 and 1470/71 .

From 1459 he was entrusted with a number of orders as commissioner and was loyal to the House of York , to Edward IV and especially to his brother, George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence .

During the Wars of the Roses , Sir Roger fought at the Battle of Towton in 1460 and at Barnet and Tewkesbury in 1471 . In Tewkesbury, Roger Tocotes received the accolade and was named Knight Banneret , according to some sources .

Sir Roger was an important steward, a senior official, and even a friend to George Plantagenet. He acted for the Duke of Clarence, among other things as a steward in some lands in Hampshire .

When Clarence and Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick openly rebelled against the king in 1469, Sir Roger stood by his master and accompanied him into exile in France in 1470. When George returned to England in 1471 and swore allegiance to his brother, King Edward IV, Sir Roger was with him. In 1475 Sir Roger was appointed to the council of George Plantagenet.

When Isabella Neville and her son Richard, who was just a few months old, died in 1476, Clarence accused Roger Tocotes and two servants, Ankarette Twynho and John Thursby, of Gilft's murder. Sir Roger was charged by Clarence but managed to escape. The other two were executed in April 1477.

After the death of George Plantagenet in 1478, Sir Roger remained loyal to King Edward IV. When Richard III. Seized the throne in 1483, Sir Roger was among the leaders under Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham , who rebelled against Richard. Richard then gave Sir Roger a Bill of Attainder , but shortly thereafter granted pardon .

On August 22, 1485, Sir Roger fought at Bosworth against King Richard III. Under the victorious Henry VII , Sir Roger was reappointed Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1485 , Knight of the Kings Body and from 1489 Comptroller of the Household .

Sir Roger Tocotes died in 1492 and is buried in St. Nicholas Church, Bromham.
