The Rohrberg nature reserve is located around two kilometers south of the Eichhall natural forest reserve in the Hohe Spessart near the Rohrbrunn motorway exit . It covers an area of around 10 hectares and was placed under protection as early as 1928, making it one of the oldest nature reserves in Bavaria .

history

The light oak forest, with individual specimens between 500 and 800 years old, owes its origin and preservation to the special management, which was based on hunting principles until 1803. The acorns served as a game. The area was first protected on January 6, 1928, making it Bavaria's oldest nature reserve. The current ordinance is from January 22, 1979.

vegetation

Centuries-old gnarled oaks characterize the forest, which did not grow naturally, but arose from an oak hut forest in which cattle from Rohrbrunn were grazed over and over again for several centuries. The much younger beeches also present show that they would dominate the Rohrberg without human intervention. In order to defuse the competition with the old oaks, a few beeches and larches were felled. Their wood was left behind as valuable dead wood.

fauna

The NSG Rohrberg offers rare birds, beetles and mushrooms, which depend on old trees and huge dead wood , a habitat that can ensure the survival of these species. These include the collar snapper , the middle and gray woodpecker , the only tree-breeding swift colony in Bavaria, the hermit and the stag beetle as well as hedgehog whiskers .
