biography

The son of a cooper and carpenter attended a private school in Regensberg. There he worked from 1832 to 1836 as a clerk, and until 1836 as a clerk at the criminal court chancellery in Zurich . Bucher studied law partly part-time at the University of Zurich , followed by shorter study visits to Lausanne , Paris and London . In 1844 he passed the exam as procurator , from 1847 to 1851 he worked in Zurich as a lawyer and finally until 1869 as clerk of the Regensberg district .

In 1853 Bucher was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Zurich , to which he belonged until 1866. After a failed candidacy in 1854, he ran successfully in the National Council elections in 1857 and then represented the constituency of Zurich-North . In parliament he consistently followed the line of his college friend Alfred Escher . Bucher campaigned for the improvement of the infrastructure in his community of Regensberg, in particular the water supply as well as telephone and telegraph connections, which is why he received honorary citizenship in 1863. In 1866 he clearly missed re-election as National Councilor. From 1869 to 1903 (still at the age of 89) he was still a lawyer.
