Roi Et ( Thai ร้อยเอ็ด , also Roiet , formerly Saket Nakhon ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง ร้อยเอ็ด ) in the Thai province of Roi Et . It is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Roi Et and the province of Roi Et.
The city of Roi Et has 34,554 inhabitants (as of 2012).
geography
The province of Roi Et is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the Isan . The city of Roi Et lies in the middle of a plain with a prairie- like character. Dried up in the hot season, it is largely under water during the rainy season .
history
The area was long inhabited and ruled by the Khmer , became dependent on the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 14th century . During the Ayutthaya period , farmers from Laos migrated to what is now Suvanna Phum. General Taksin arranged for most of the inhabitants to be relocated to Roit Et (then still Saket Nakhon) to ensure better defense. Roi Et has been the provincial capital since the beginning of the Chakri dynasty . Almost nothing is left of the 11 city gates that led to the subordinate localities in the area.
Economy and Importance
Since Roi Et is off the route from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima , Khon Kaen and the eastern neighbors Laos and Cambodia , economic development is mainly directed towards the local market. Attempts are being made to transform the wide plain around Roi Et into a fertile landscape with the help of irrigation projects and thus to strengthen agriculture , which mainly contributes to the economic power of the province.
