Roland Berger (horn player)

Roland Berger (born June 16, 1937 in Berlin ) is an Austrian horn player .

Life

The son of horn player Hans Berger moved with his family to Pörtschach in 1943 , where he lived until 1945. From 1946 he lived in Vienna, where he became a member of the Vienna Boys' Choir . At the same time he received piano lessons . At the age of 11 he had three years of drums lessons . From 1951 he received lessons on the horn from Gottfried von Freiberg and from 1952 to 1953 he was the drummer at the St. Pölten City Theater .

As early as 1953 he gained orchestral experience at the Vienna Volksoper , where he was employed as a substitute on the 3rd and 4th horn. In 1955 he got a position at the Vienna State Opera as 3rd horn player. In 1961 Berger was accepted as a member of the Vienna Philharmonic , where he held the position of solo horn player until 1984, after which he switched again to the 3rd horn until he left in 1993.

As a horn teacher, Berger was professor for horn at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna from 1984 . He held this position until 2005. Roland Berger's students included Ronald Janezic , Thomas Jöbstl , Sebastian Mayr, Josef Reif , Martin Bramböck , Lars Michael Stransky and Wolfgang Vladar.
