Roland Fraïssé

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roland Fraïssé (born December 3, 1920 , † March 30, 2008 in Marseille ) was a French mathematical logician who dealt with the theory of relations and model theory.

Fraïssé received his doctorate in 1950 from the University of Paris with a thesis that laid the foundations for the method of Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé games in model theory, which was later developed by Andrzej Ehrenfeucht . He was a professor at the University of Lyon and from 1991 at the University of Marseille .

In model theory, the Fraissé limit value is named after him, with which a structure is approximated by finitely generated substructures. They were introduced by him in 1954 in the special case of the approximation of rational numbers by classes of finite linear orders. The set of Fraisse algebraic characterization of elementary equivalence is associated with his name.
