Rolf-Peter Kudritzki (born October 9, 1945 ) is a German astronomer.

Kudritzki studied physics at the TU Berlin with a diploma in 1971 and received his doctorate there in 1973 in astronomy. In 1979 he completed his habilitation at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , at whose observatory he was from 1976.

In 1979 he became professor there and in 1982 professor of astronomy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and director of the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics. From 1999 to 2000 he was dean of the physics faculty there. From 2000 he was a professor at the University of Hawaii , where he was director of the Institute for Astronomy from 2000 to 2010. In 2003/04 he was Interim Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In 2012 he was also founding director of the Institute for Astrophysics and Astroparticle Physics at the University of Munich and the Technical University of Munich.

He deals with extragalactic stellar astronomy, stellar atmospheres and their radiation transport, stellar winds, stellar spectroscopy and giant stars (supergiants) in order to investigate the chemical evolution of galaxies on these brightest stars and to determine the distance scale.

He is involved in the Pan-STARRS Survey.

In 2009 he received the Karl Schwarzschild Medal . He has been a scientific member of the Max Planck Society since 1990 . In 2009 he received a Humboldt Research Award . He is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Leopoldina .
