Rolf Jaeger
Rolf Jaeger (born February 18, 1937 in Gummersbach ; † May 2, 2011 ibid) was a German handball player and coach .
Career
Jaeger became a member of VfL Gummersbach in 1946 . First he started in the club as a gymnast , then with field handball . The then national handball coach Werner Vick appointed him to the national field handball team in 1956. This made Jaeger the first national player for VfL after the Second World War . In 1963 he was West German champion with VfL. In 1966 Jaeger , who played on the left side of the back , won the German championship with the VfL team in indoor handball, which was still less popular at the time . Other players included Hansi Schmidt and Bernd Podak .
After his active career, the qualified engineer became a handball trainer . With VfL he was German champion in the 1975/76 season . Then Jaeger was on the board of VfL. In addition, he was a member of the City Council of Gummersbach from 1979 to 2009.
Honors
After the national champions won the European Cup in 1967, Rolf Jaeger received the highest sporting award in Germany: the silver laurel leaf . On June 1st, 2009 he was appointed to the Allstar Team of VfL Gummersbach. On September 17, 2009 Jaeger received the Golden City Medal in a special coinage from the city of Gummersbach.
