Bernd Podak

Bernd Podak (born August 20, 1942 in Berlin ; † March 13, 2018 in Marienheide ) was a German handball goalkeeper .

Career

Podak began his handball career in his hometown at TSV 1860 Spandau . He then moved to local rivals TuS Neukölln , SAS Charlottenburg and PSV Berlin , where he mainly played field handball . In 1965 he was signed by VfL Gummersbach and then mainly played indoor handball. In 1966 he became German champions with the Oberbergers. In the final game he left the goal in the final phase, played on the field and scored the decisive 12: 9 against Leutershausen . This earned him the reputation of being the Radenković of handball . The football goalkeeper Petar Radenković was known at the time for his "trips" out of the penalty area. After a number of national and international successes, Podak went to TuS Derschlag in 1972 . With the team he rose to the Bundesliga in 1975 . Podak ended his career a year later.

Bernd Podak played twelve international matches for Germany .

On April 28, 1967, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf for winning the European Cup of National Champions .

Podak was a very versatile athlete . With 7.27 m in the long jump and 71.96 m in the javelin throw, he was German police master and in pentathlon German runner-up champion. In addition, he also played football and rose to the national league with the football team of VfL Gummersbach .

Podak was a police chief inspector by profession . Podak, who had the A license as a handball coach , was still connected to handball and coached a youth team.
