Rolf Unbehauen (born April 23, 1930 in Stuttgart ; † November 4, 2016 in Nuremberg ) was a German electrical engineer .

He studied mathematics in Stuttgart. He was interested in the applications of mathematics, especially in electrical engineering. In this field he received his doctorate in 1957 in Stuttgart ( novel realization of two-pole functions through canonical or coupling-free circuits ) and obtained his habilitation in 1962 in the theory of electrical engineering ( on the solution of approximation problems in the synthesis of electrical two-pole ).

From 1955 to 1964 he was employed at the University of Stuttgart at the Mathematical Institute, the Computing Center and the Institute for Theory of Electrical Engineering of Wilhelm Bader , where he became scientific advisor.

In 1966 he was appointed to the newly founded Technical Faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . After his retirement in 1998, he headed the chair for general and theoretical electrical engineering until 2000. He researched systems theory , network theory and field theory .

He was a member of the Information Technology Society and the International Union of Radio Science (URSI; Commission C: Signals and Systems). He was co-editor of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing . In 1959 he received the Best Paper Award from NTG and in 1994 an honorary doctorate from the Romanian Technical University of Cluj-Napoca .

His younger brother Heinz Unbehauen was also an engineering scientist.
