Rolf W. Günther

Rolf Wilhelm Günther (* 1943 in Strasbourg , Alsace) is a German doctor in the field of diagnostic and interventional radiology / minimally invasive therapy .

Life

Günther studied medicine in Heidelberg and Vienna and received his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1968. He was qualified as a specialist in radiology at the University of Mainz in 1975 and completed his habilitation there in 1979. From 1984 until his retirement in 2010, he was professor and director of the Clinic for Radiological Diagnostics at the RWTH Aachen University Hospital and since 2011 visiting scientist at the Institute for Radiology at the Charité / Berlin.

In the context of European radiology, he was President of the European Congress of Radiology (ECR 2000) and the European Association of Radiology (2001). He was European editor of the journal Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (CVIR) (1990–1995), editor and co-editor of the journal Advances in the Field of X-Rays and Imaging (RöFo) (1991–2005) and Senior Editor of the journal European Radiology. He was also an expert reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG) and a member of the DFG's Apparatus Committee.

His scientific focus is on the further development of diagnostic and interventional radiology / minimally invasive therapy for vascular and organ diseases. He is the author and co-author of around 700 scientific publications, three books and the owner of several patents (including Cavafilter ). The Rolf W. Günther Foundation he founded supports young scientists and projects in radiology.

Günther has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 1998 , continues to be an honorary member of the German Radiological Society, German and Austrian Society for Interventional Radiology DeGIR, ÖGIR , Swiss Society for Radiology, Société Française de Radiologie, Royal College of Radiologists , Radiological Society of North America , Japan Radiological Society and Corresponding Member of the Austrian Radiological Society.

Since 1964 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Arminia Heidelberg .

Honors

He received the X-ray Prize for Medicine of the University of Würzburg on the occasion of the centenary of the discovery of X-rays, the Alken Prize, the gold medal and Grüntzig medal of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE), the X-ray badge of the city of Remscheid , the gold medal of the European Congress of Radiology and the Society of Interventional Radiology (USA), the Schinz Medal of the Swiss Society for Radiology, the Antoine Béclère Medal of the Société Française de Radiologie as well as the International Society of Radiology (ISR) and the Alfred Breit Prize 2012 .
