Roman Hofer (church musician)

Father Roman Hofer (worldly name: Paul Hofer ) OSB (born March 24, 1942 in Basel ; † October 5, 2011 in Engelberg ), dipl. mus. sacr., was a Swiss Benedictine priest, church musician , music librarian and teacher.

Life

After graduating from the Engelberg Abbey School , he entered the novitiate in Engelberg in 1962 . He made his profession on September 29, 1963 , took the religious name Roman and was ordained a priest on May 3, 1967. From 1968 to 1974 he studied church music in Munich (organ, choir and orchestra conducting). During his studies he took over the representation of the cathedral music director in Limburg an der Lahn and directed the Limburger Domsingknaben and the cathedral choir. In 1974 he returned to Engelberg Abbey and was appointed collegiate bandmaster by Abbot Leonhard Bösch. He also worked as a choral magister, music librarian and teacher for music, German and religion at the collegiate school. He also worked as a co-author of the German translation of the Benedictine antiphonal .
