Roman Klonek

Roman Klonek (* 1969 in Katowice , Poland) is an illustrator and printmaker , he is one of the internationally known representatives of contemporary printmaking in Germany.

Life

Roman Klonek's family came from Poland to the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s, and he grew up in Hanover. From 1993 to 1999 Klonek studied visual communication (focus on printmaking) at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences , supplemented by a scholarship for wood printing at the Trier Art Academy . During his studies he founded the artist group “Tapezisten” and the graphic fanzine “Herrensahne” with friends, together with Tobi Dahmen , Leo Leowald , and others. a. Since graduating, Klonek has been working as a freelance artist and graphic designer. From 2001 to 2008 Klonek was co-organizer of the Düsseldorf “Galerie Revolver”. He regularly gives woodcut workshops at graphic schools and has been a participant in the “Pictoplasma” festival for character design. In 2012, Klonek was a visiting professor at the Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Roman Klonek lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Roman Klonek names Polish, Russian and Czech cartoons of the 1970s as an influence, but also current American and Japanese graphic artists. In an interview he mentioned Frank Kozik , Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami , Raymond Pettibon , Gary Baseman and Zdeněk Miler as role models . Klonek's graphic production mainly relates to multi-colored wood prints. He uses the "lost cut" technique, where the printing block can only be used once. Klonek produces around 20 woodcut motifs per year, printed by hand in editions of up to ten pieces. Klonek's woodcuts are shown at exhibitions in Germany and increasingly internationally, most recently in Oslo, London and São Paulo. Klonek does commissioned drawings for magazines and newspapers (WIRED, New York Times , San Francisco Chronicle ) as well as for advertisers.
