Leo Leowald
Leo Leowald (* 1967 in Gummersbach ) is a German comic artist .
Life
After studying visual communication, Leowald provides illustrations for magazines and newspapers (including taz , Spex , Titanic and Jungle World ). He is a member of the drawing collective Herrensahne (including Tobi Dahmen and Roman Klonek ) and published the weekly comic strip "Zwarwald" on his website from May 15, 2004 to February 16, 2010 as "a kind of James Kochalka from Cologne". This was followed by a break of several months with the occasional new comic strip. Since the end of 2010 the publications have been lively again, new "Zwarwald" drawings are now mostly appearing several times a week.
Leowald's works take up anecdotes, observations and biographical material, but can also take the form of purely graphic picture narrations or even metafictional games of reference. Leowald also experiments with works by befriended comic artists or authors (for example Ralph Ruthe or Flix ), series (within the series, for example the "Tant" cycle) or multimedia, intertextual mixed forms between comics and other media.
Leowald's graphic works are in the tradition of the New Frankfurt School (he names FK Waechter , Rattelschneck and Bernd Pfarr as influencers), the narrative style and the processing of biographical and observed material are reminiscent of Max Goldt's columns . Leowald himself calls his work " kafkaeske Ulks", his style "baroque".
Leo Leowald lives and works in Cologne.
