The building is 31 m long and 11 m wide. The structure of the house, which is made of natural stone, dates back to the Romanesque period around the year 1100. It belonged to a bishop's court in the diocese of Naumburg . At the time the Pforta Cistercian Abbey was set up, Cusne (Kösen) was a Vorwerk , so it was dependent on the school gate .

The building has been used as a museum since 1955. It shows a permanent exhibition about the history of the city of Kosen and the history of the Pforta monastery. On the upper floor, the history of the Kösener salt works until 1859 and the subsequent development of the place into a brine bath is shown. This is complemented by some exhibits on the history of the Kösener Seniors Convents Association in the city. Through the Romanesque House, a sculpture garden with a small exhibition of partly medieval and partly contemporary sculpture leads to the art gallery . Temporary exhibitions are shown on the ground floor and a collection of around 250 dolls by the Kösener artist Käthe Kruse and the Wilhelm Bröker collection on the upper floor . Since the incorporation of Bad Kösens into Naumburg on January 1, 2010, the Romanesque House has been run as an institution of the Naumburg City Museum.
