The photographic work

The focus of his work is on people and their environment in the area of tension between tradition and globalization. Committed to reportage photography, he prefers to work with wide-angle lenses to show people around them. He approaches them carefully. His pictures show sympathy and empathy - and yet are full of fine irony.

Charles-Henri Favrod ( Musée de l'Elysée ), founder and long-time director of the Museum of Photography in Lausanne writes: "Every single image conveys emotions, focuses the gaze, interprets and deduces. Photography goes much further than mere anecdotes. It provides information and permanent traces. It supports memories, records time and light. And despite its precision, it awakens dreams and stimulates the imagination. " (In "Alpzeit", 1996).

In addition to commissions for the press and advertising, he realizes large reports, designs illustrated books and exhibitions in museums and galleries.

He has an autodidactic training as a photographer. The first publications came out in 1985, and since 1986 he has been working as a freelance journalist and photographer for Swiss media and also works as a text journalist.

In 1994 he published his first black and white illustrated book ( Eisträume ). The bilingual work is a report about the Freiburg ice hockey club and its audience at the time of Vyacheslav Bykov and Andrei Khomutov .

The work Alpzeit was shown in numerous museum exhibitions, was awarded the SAB Prize for cultural workers and supported by Pro Helvetia. In it, the photographer deals in detail with alpine farming and everyday mountain farming in Switzerland.

In 2004 he published Allergattig Lütt on behalf of and in collaboration with the Deutschfreiburger Heimatkundeverein . In this book project he portrayed facets of everyday life in the German-speaking part of the canton of Friborg.

For several years he photographed in Gruyères for the reportage project La Gruyère - Arrêt sur images . The region is experiencing an economic boom, and Riedo exemplifies the development of a society between tradition and modernity.

His long-term project "Hinterland, 1993 - 2013" about the living environment of mountain farmers in Switzerland was awarded the Swiss Press Photo Prize in the reporting category in 2014.

In addition to the focus on black and white reports, FineArt photography, including the Polaroid SX-70 film.
