Ronald Anthony Gettelfinger (born  August 1, 1944 in Depauw , Indiana ), usually called Ron Gettelfinger in public , is an American trade union official . From 2002 to 2010 he was President of the United Auto Workers (UAW), a union that represents workers in the automotive industry in the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico in particular and is one of the most influential and strong unions in North America.

Life

Ron Gettelfinger was born in Depauw in 1944 as one of twelve children in a farming family. After high school , he joined the Marine Corps Reserve , and in 1976 earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Indiana University Southeast in evening classes . He is married and has two children.

He began his union involvement in 1964 at a Ford Motor Company plant in Louisville, Kentucky , where he worked as a coachbuilder and in 1984 took over the management of local union representation. From 1987 he was a member of the UAW's collective bargaining commission for Ford, later he became director of UAW regional office 3 for the states of Indiana and Kentucky and in 1998 UAW vice president and head of the UAW division for Ford.

In June 2002 he took over the office of President of the UAW from Stephen Yokich , and was re-elected for a further term four years later. He was succeeded in June 2010 by Bob King .
