The Bandwohlerplatz is the central place and the center of the former small town Ronsdorf , today a district of the Bergisch city of Wuppertal in North Rhine-Westphalia . The square, located in the residential area of Ronsdorf-Mitte / Nord , is surrounded by Staasstrasse and Marktstrasse . Once the market square in front of the historic town hall, the square is now one of the most important inner-city parks in the district.

The central bus stops in Ronsdorf are also located here.

history

The square goes back to the former market square, which is already marked in the city map from 1781 with the market street.

The first town hall of the city of Ronsdorf was inaugurated in 1842 and burned down on the night of bombing from May 29th to 30th, 1943 . An administration building was later erected on the same site , which was demolished at the end of 2005 after it was "getting on in years". In its place, on February 1, 2007, a new building constructed by a private investor was inaugurated, in which, among other things, the administrative offices and the district library are housed.

On May 10, 1890, the Kaiser & Krieger Memorial (also known as the Two Emperor Monument) was inaugurated. During the Second World War, the bronze figures were removed and probably melted down. The remaining base was removed in April 1959.

The bandweaver memorial

In front of the office building is the bandmaker 's monument by the Remscheid sculptor Max Kratz on the square in front of the administration building between Marktstrasse and Staasstrasse. The inauguration took place on May 30, 1980 by the then Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia , Johannes Rau . The monument is surrounded by two benches, which symbolically represent weaver shuttles and were donated by a company in the traditional textile industry from Ronsdorf.

The lawned and partially paved place is surrounded by paths with donated benches. It is used for local events such as the Ronsdorfer delivery bag or the Christmas market .

The redesign of the band-knitting place was financed to a not inconsiderable part by donations from the population and was officially inaugurated in 2007.

At the entrance to the forecourt in front of the offices there is a bronze plaque with the names of the fellow citizens of Ronsdorf who were deported and murdered during the tyranny of the National Socialists .

Ronsdorf delivery bag

Every two years the Ronsdorfer Liefersack folk festival takes place on the Bandwirerplatz for the benefit of social and non-profit purposes, which is carried out by the Ronsdorfer Heimat- und Bürgererverein eV in cooperation with the Ronsdorf district council and numerous choral societies, communities and organizations. The aim of the event is to bring Ronsdorfer closer together.

The name of this festival is based on the Rongsdroper Liéwersack , a linen sack with which the workers of the formerly independent ribbon-knitting town picked up yarns from Elberfeld or Barmen in the 19th century and delivered them back as finished ribbons after the knitting.

On June 19, 1949, the Ronsdorf Reconstruction Ring, together with sports and choral clubs, organized the first local festival after the Second World War. In 1956, the Ronsdorf district council called on the clubs in Ronsdorf to organize a local festival under their patronage. The Ronsdorfer Heimatfest work committee was founded, and after the first Heimatfest in 1957, the Ronsdorf Heimatbund was formed from this work committee .

The first home festivals were celebrated in downtown Ronsdorf. At the end of the 1950s, after the war, there was an undeveloped ash area at this point, on which a large tent was set up. The first home festivals were celebrated with parades of the participating clubs. Sometimes the home festivals were held over a full week, often under a specific motto. In 1977 the local community and citizens' association developed into an established term for its local festival "Ronsdorfer Liefersack". After the completion of the band knitting place in 2007, the Ronsdorfer delivery bag will take place again in the center of the district.

The Ronsdorfer Liefersack typically takes place on a weekend (Friday to Saturday) every two years in June and is opened by the Lord Mayor of Wuppertal and the District Mayor of Ronsdorf. On these days, an extensive program is offered by Ronsdorf kindergartens, choirs and associations, which culminates in the evening with live music events. The proceeds go to charitable and social purposes, so up to the introduction of the euro in 2001 over 120,000 DM were donated.
