The Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy Project ( RITE Project for short ) is a project to generate energy from the tidal currents in the East River in New York City . A demonstration plant was operated from 2006 to 2009. Since then, an improved rebuild has been planned, but has not yet taken place (as of October 2019).
location
RITE is a marine current power plant and is located in the East Channel of the East River between the New York borough of Queens and Roosevelt Island north of the Roosevelt Island Bridge. Since the East River is not a river, but a strait between Long Island Sound and New York Bay, current speeds of up to approximately 2.7 meters per second are achieved there due to the cross-section and the tides .
Demonstration plant
The operating company of RITE, Verdant Power, began project development in 2002. From 2006 to 2009, a demonstration system with six five-meter-high turbines with an output of 35 kW each was anchored in the East River, which temporarily provided electricity for a supermarket and a parking garage delivered on Roosevelt Island. However, the current turned out to be so strong that turbine blades were torn off.
