The Rosa-Luxemburg-Siedlung is a new district in Schipkau that owed its origin to the GDR housing program .

history

Already in the 1960s and 1970s, plans were made to expand the new Schipkau on Friedrich-Engels-Straße with another new housing estate. After several changes to the plan, construction work on the new Rosa-Luxemburg-Siedlung development began in the late 1980s and continued into the early 1990s. The resulting settlement was originally an unrealized project, which was intended for Berlin's Nikolaiviertel . However, since the concrete slabs had already been made and were ultimately out of the question for Berlin, these blocks were gradually built in Schipkau.

With the political and economic turnaround in 1989/1990, the settlement was divided into two housing associations. One part became the property of KWG Senftenberg and the other part became the property of AWG Senftenberg. The AWG began modernization measures in 1996 and some blocks of the estate received new entrance areas and a colorful exterior facade made of sheet metal and plastic, whereas the modernization of the KWG was limited to a few interior work. With the increasing relocation in the years after the fall of the Wall, there was a high number of vacancies in the town, which led to the AWG in 2006 having three of the blocks demolished again.
