The Rosa Lila Villa on Linke Wienzeile

The Rosa Lila Villa is an Austrian lesbian, gay and transgender center on Linke Wienzeile in the 6th Viennese district Mariahilf . It is designed as a consulting and event location, gastronomy and residential project.

history

The initiative to found the “villa”, as it is shortened, is rooted in the squatter scene of the late 1970s and 80s and in the early lesbian and gay movement . In the course of other squats in Gasser- and Egidigasse, the house on Linke Wienzeile, which was planned for demolition, was occupied in 1982. After lengthy negotiations with the municipality of Vienna as the owner and the Deputy Mayor Gertrude Fröhlich-Sandner , who campaigned for the project, a contract was finally signed in 1984 between the activists, organized as the “Rosa Lila Tip” association, and the city Self-management and animation of the property, closed for 30 years; this although the then applicable legal situation made the "advertising for fornication with persons of the same sex" (§ 220 Austrian Criminal Code) as well as "connections for the promotion of same-sex fornication" (§ 221 Austrian Criminal Code) a punishable offense.

The building was completely renovated, partly with a private initiative and partly with public subsidies, and turned into a center for advice for homosexual and transgender people on the one hand, and a restaurant and shared apartments on the other. The lettering “1. Wiener Schwulen- und Lesbenhaus ”carries the villa in a slightly modified form (“ Lesbian and Gay House ”) to this day. In addition to the HOSI , which found a different way of discourse with the march through the institutions, the Rosa Lila Villa has been engaged in political work and lobbying for non-heterosexual people since its foundation and is one of the pioneers for the emancipation of the gay and lesbian movement in Austria . With the emergence of the HIV virus , the villa has also found a field of activity in AIDS work and education about this topic.

organization

In addition to the sponsoring association, the villa is now divided into the Lila Tip , ie the lesbian counseling , the Turquoise Rosa Tippp , ie the transsexual , gay and queer counseling and the Willendorf restaurant . It organizes regular events and group meetings and maintains a library of relevant works. The villa sees its self- image in a “utopian alternative to the dominant mainstream concepts of forced heterosexuality , partriarchy and the binary construction of identity”.

Opposing voices and criticism

The ÖVP politician Kurt Pint, former district chairman of the sixth district of Vienna, was angry about the “moral ruin” on the facade of the villa; the FPÖ politician Hilmar Kabas called the villa a “subsidized brothel”.
