Rosaline von Villeneuve (also spelled Roseline , Rosalina , Roselyne or Rossolina ) (* 1263 ; † January 17, 1329 ) was a French Carthusian woman . She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Rosaline was the eldest daughter of Count Arnaud de Villeneuve and Sybille (de Burgolle) de Sabran. Her brother was the Grand Master of the Order of St. John , Hélion de Villeneuve . She was born at Château d'Arcs . According to tradition, her father forbade her to give food to the poor who begged outside the castle. When she had gathered bread in her apron and tried to sneak out in the dark, her father caught her. When he asked what she was wearing, she said they were roses that she had just picked. When she opened the apron, there were roses in it instead of bread. Her father immediately ordered that each poor person should be given something to eat at the door.

Rosaline's aunt Jeanne de Villeneuve was the prioress of the Celle-Roubaud Charterhouse in Les Arcs . Roseline wanted to be a Carthusian like her aunt . Around 1278 she entered the Carthusian monastery of Saint-André-de-Ramières in Provence as a novice and her mother also joined the Carthusians at the same time. In 1280 Rosaline made her profession in the Bertaud monastery (between the rivers Drac and Durance ) at the age of sixteen .

Around 1285 Rosaline was sent back to Celle-Roubaud and given her aunt administrative support. After her death around 1300 she became prioress of Celle-Roubaud. The bishop of Fréjus, who was friends with her, became Pope John XXII in 1316 . Her brother Hélion, who had donated a monastery church to the Carthusians, was taken prisoner at the time of the Crusades , but managed to escape and got home safely by sea. He reported that he had a vision of his sister who appeared to him in a cloud of roses.

Adoration

Miracles are said to have happened shortly after her death. When Rosaline's grave was opened five years later, on June 11, 1334, both the body and the eyes were found intact. In 1851 Pope Pius IX spoke . Rosaline of Villeneuve holy.

The day of remembrance of the holy Rosaline is celebrated on January 17th, in the Order of the Carthusians on October 16th. For June 11th, the Acta Sanctorum provide for the festival of the translation of relics , which has been celebrated since 1334. In iconography , the holy rosaline is usually depicted in the habit of the Carthusian women, with rose petals in an apron scapular , often with a wreath of roses on their heads. She also occasionally holds a reliquary that contains her eyes. Relics of the saints can be found in Les Arcs-sur-Argens and Parkminster . The Sainte Roseline Charterhouse in Les Arcs is now dedicated to its patronage.
