The Rosegger-Janker is a traditional jacket from Styria , which is widely used in the Austrian Alpine region. It is made of a black and green checked loden fabric (similar to the pepita ).

History and appearance

In the middle of the 19th century, the writer Peter Rosegger was best known throughout the German-speaking area for his socially critical stories from the life of the Styrian mountain farmers . For this reason the textile manufacturer Kawann named his black and green checked Loden with the consent of the poet Rosegger-Loden ; The Rosegger jacket is made from this material to this day. Checkered loden fabrics had been handed down for centuries in the closer Upper and East Styrian homeland of the poet. In the 1930s, these fabrics experienced a fashionable renaissance: until then they were mainly used for the work jackets of farmers and servants, from this point onwards they found widespread use as part of the renewal of traditional costumes, including in non-peasant circles.

The Rosegger Janker's length slightly shorter than a jacket, as it mainly for leather pants worn, has breast rashes and a collar of the same material and is closed with three staghorn buttons. Due to its original role as workwear, its design is kept deliberately simple and hardly decorated, in contrast to some forms of the Styrian suit .

In addition to the classic black and green loden, it is also occasionally made in red-black and green-brown. In Salzburg and Upper Austria a very similar jacket made of Rosegger loden is worn, but with a black stand-up collar and five buttons.

The journalist Günther Nenning wrote an essay about the Rosegger-Janker.
