Ross Priory

Pross Priory is a manor house near the Scottish town of Gartocharn in West Dunbartonshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The Buchanan clan had ruled the lands since the 14th century . In 1695 he built one of his family residences on the site of today's manor house. Today's Ross Priory was designed by architect James Gillespie Graham and was built between 1810 and 1816. Elements of the old building were integrated into the new structure and this was significantly expanded. In 1817 the writer Walter Scott spent some time in the mansion, where he also wrote most of his novel Rob Roy . The British Major George Christie later bought the property, who in turn sold it to the Teacher’s whiskey company . The building has belonged to the University of Strathclyde since 1971 . It is not open to the public. The associated park is opened to visitors once a year.
