Ross Spears

Ross Spears (born 1947 in Johnson City , Tennessee ) is an American documentary filmmaker .

Life

Spears received a Guggenheim Fellowship and made his first documentary in 1980 . The documentary about the American poet James Agee , in which Jimmy Carter , John Huston and Robert Saudek, among others , had their say, was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Documentary in 1981.

His next project was Electric Valley through the Tennessee Valley Authority , the largest US power producer on behalf of the PBS . The Long Shadows dealt with the effects of the Civil War . Then Spears turned to James Agee one more time, In 1992 To Render a Life was written about his book I want the big men to praise . Tell About the South: Voices in Black and White was another production for PBS about southern literature prior to the start of World War II . For Appalachia: A History of Mountains and People about the Appalachians , he won Sissy Spacek as the narrator.

In his productions, Spears mostly acts as a director , producer and screenwriter in personal union . Sometimes he also leads the camera or is responsible for editing the film .
