Rossinish , also Roisinis , ( Gaelic : Ròisinis ) is a peninsula on the Scottish Hebridean island of Benbecula . It is located on the east coast in the north of the island about 3.5 km east-southeast of Gramsdale and has a maximum length of about 1.7 km in an east-west direction and a maximum width of about 1.1 km. In the west, Rossinish is connected to the main island by an isthmus about 100 m wide.
As part of the Second Jacobite Uprising , the British Prince Charles Edward Stuart ( Bonnie Prince Charlie ) fled to the Scottish Islands after an odyssey of several months. He landed on Rossinish, where he had an appointment with the Jacobite Flora MacDonald . There, Stuart was dressed as a maid "Betty Burke" in women's clothing and fled across the strait The Minch to the Isle of Skye and finally to France .
Evidence of settlement from the time of the bell beaker culture to the Middle Ages was found on Rossinish . Settlement is around the 19th century BC. Dated. There are archaeological finds in the form of potsherds from post-Roman times; also an iron nail and two pierced bronze pieces.
