The river Rossiza ( Bulgarian Росица ) is a main tributary of the Jantra in central-north Bulgaria , which in turn flows into the Danube .

The river is 164 km long and has a water catchment area of 2265 km².

The Rossitsa rises in the Kalofer Mountains (Bulgarian Калоферска планина / Kaloferska planina, part of the Central Balkans ) near the Masalat mountain hut (Bulgarian Мазалат ) and flows in a northerly direction. Their tributaries are the rivers:

  • Lopuschnitsa (Bulgarian Лопушница ),
  • Widima (Bulgarian Видима ),
  • Tschuparate ( Bulgar . Чупарата ),
  • Krapez (Bulgarian Крапец ),
  • Negovanka (Bulgarian Негованка ),
  • Bochot (Bulgarian Бохот ).

The city of Sevlievo (Bulgarian Севлиево ) lies on the left bank. The Rossitsa flows from the left into the Jantra - in the area of the village Kruscheto ( Bulgar . Крушето ).

In the city of Sevlievo leads a stone bridge over the river, which was built in 1857-1858 by the builder Kolju Fitscheto (Bulgarian Колю Фичето). The Aleksandar Stambolijski reservoir (named after Aleksandar Stambolijski ), which dams the river, was built in 1953. Before that there were several major floods by the Rossitsa (1848, 1858, 1871, 1897, 1901). After heavy rains, the river burst its banks on June 28, 1938. 47 people drowned and forty houses were destroyed, hundreds of pets drowned and the area's infrastructure was destroyed.

The river flows past near the village of Nikjup and the ancient Roman city of Nicopolis ad Istrum .
