The rust-wing Ameisenwürger ( Thamnophilus torquatus ) has within the family of Antbirds (Thamnophilidae) for generic Thamnophilus .

The species occurs in Bolivia , Brazil and Paraguay as well as in the Amazon basin .

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist lowland forest, dry savannah and moist bush-covered habitats mostly below 1000, but up to 1750 m altitude.

The Latin additional species comes from the Latin torquatus 'with a collar or collar' .

features

The bird is about 14 cm tall and weighs between 18 and 20 g. The male has a black cap with gray head and gray on top of the wing and wing covers are cinnamon to reddish brown, the stepped tail is black, the outer control springs have white bands, throat and underside are whitish, the chest is black banded. It is distinguished from the similar rust-crowned ant shrike ( Thamnophilus ruficapillus ) by its small size, paler plumage and the black cap. The female has reddish brown on the cap and tail, the sides of the head are spotted whitish and gray, the upper side is paler, the underside is yellowish-brown with no or only indicated banding.

The species is monotypical .

voice

The song is described as a quicker and shorter series of nasal tones “rhen, rehn, rhen, reh-reh-reh-reh-rénh”. In contrast to the rust-crowned ant shrike, the first sound is long.

Way of life

The food consists of insects , which are mostly looked for alone in dense bushes near the ground or up to 2 m above.

The breeding season is between April and June in eastern Brazil.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
