The rust-crowned ant shrike ( Thamnophilus ruficapillus ) belongs to the genus Thamnophilus within the family of ant birds (Thamnophilidae) .
The species occurs in Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil , Paraguay , Peru and Uruguay .
The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist mountain forest as well as bush-lined habitats between 1750 and 3050 m altitude.
The Latin additional species comes from the Latin rufus 'red, reddish' and the Latin capillus 'hairy, scalp hair' .
features
The bird is 15 to 17 cm tall and weighs between 16 and 25 g and has a rust-red cap that gives it its name. The iris is reddish, the strong gray bill is darker on the upper side towards the tip with a small hook. The male is clearly banded in white and black on the chest and underside, the wings are light red-brown, the rest of the plumage is gray or gray-brown. In the female, the underside is ocher-colored with or without banding.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- T. r. jaczewskii Domaniewski , 1925 - Northern Peru
- T. r. marcapatae Hellmayr , 1912 - Southeast Peru
- T. r. subfasciatus P. L. Sclater & Salvin , 1876 - Western Bolivia
- T. r. cochabambae ( Chapman , 1921) - Bolivia to northwestern Argentina
- T. r. ruficapillus Vieillot , 1816, nominate form - Paraguay, southeastern Brazil, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina
voice
The chant is described as a series of nasal sounds “wah, nyah, nyah-nyah-nya-nya-nya'nya-arr” that get faster, at first rising, then falling.
Way of life
The food probably consists of insects that are sought individually or in pairs, mostly near the ground, sometimes up to 7 m in height.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
