Rostislav Alexeyev ( Russian Ростислав Евгеньевич Алексеев , scientific transliteration. Rostislav Evgen'evič Alekseev * 18th December 1916 in Novozybkov ; † 9. February 1980 in Gorky ) one was Soviet ships and aircraft designer, the creator of numerous hydrofoils and ground effect vehicles (Ekranoplane ).

Life

Rostislav Alexejew was born in the family of an agronomist and a teacher. In 1933 the family moved to Gorky. In 1935 Alexejew began studying at the shipbuilding faculty of the Gorkier Technical University, which today bears his name. In 1941 he completed his studies as a shipbuilding engineer , but worked in tank production until 1943. From 1942, however, he was already head of a design office in which hydrofoil combat boats were developed. His models had not yet been produced by the end of the war, but convinced the leadership of the Soviet fleet of the successful application of his idea.

In 1951, Alexejew and his team received the Stalin Prize of the Second Degree for the development of hydrofoils. The collective began work on the then unprecedented passenger ship project, which was christened Raketa . The ship was presented in Moscow in 1957 and was subsequently used throughout the USSR. This was followed by other projects by Alexeyev named Volga , Meteor , Kometa , Sputnik , Burewestnik and Woschod . In 1961 Alexejew received the Lenin Prize together with ten other designers .

In 1962, the Alexejew design office began developing the KM ground-effect vehicle for the Soviet fleet, and in 1964, work on the Ekranoplan T-1 for the airborne troops. The first should only fly a few meters above water, the second at an altitude of up to 7500 meters. On June 22, 1966, the Ekranoplan KM, the largest aircraft of its time, was completed and tested on the Caspian Sea . The western secret services gave the unknown marine vehicle, which they discovered on satellite photos, the nickname "Caspian Sea Monster".

In the early 1970s, Alexejew was commissioned to build the A-90 Orljonok ground-effect vehicle for amphibious warfare . This was completed in 1979 and taken into service with the fleet. While testing a new passenger ekranoplan to be built for the Moscow Olympics , Alexeyev contracted a hernia and died after two operations on February 9, 1980.
