The competition program was identical to that of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . However, the world association ITTF had enforced that for the first time only two athletes per country were allowed to start in the individual. So the Chinese dominance should be restricted. Chinese athletes won all six possible individual medals in 2008. The team competitions were held this time in the knockout system .
174 athletes took part, including 88 women and 86 men. Two quota places for the individual competitions were reserved for the host NOK , and the ITTF issued another two quota places by invitation after qualifying. For women and men, 16 teams each started with three athletes. 72 athletes competed individually, but no more than three from one country. The following qualification criteria applied in parallel to women and men.
The 28 best athletes in the world rankings, which was published after the 2011 World Cup, qualified individually . 40 additional starting places were awarded through continental tournaments (eleven in Asia and Europe, six in Latin America and Africa and three in North America and Oceania). The last two starting places were awarded to the two best athletes of a final international qualifying tournament. The best team on each continent qualified for the team competition at the 2012 World Team Championship . A team of the host is also qualified. The last nine places were awarded to countries in which three athletes had met the qualification criteria for a single start. If this was the case for more than nine countries, the nine best-placed teams in the 2012 World Cup were taken into account.
In the oceanic qualifying competition, Li Chunli and Phillip Xiao from New Zealand were able to qualify first . After the starting places were given back to the ITTF, the two qualifiers from Vanuatu moved up. Matilda Ekholm from Sweden did qualify for participation, but was not allowed by the National Olympic Committee of Sweden because they saw no prospect that Ekholm could reach a place in the top eight. The Ukrainian Tetjana Bilenko took her place.
