history

The first building was mentioned in a document in 1290. At that time the city of Ribnitz was still part of the Rostock rule , which extended to the Recknitz . At the site of the first gate building, the successor building, which still exists today, was built around 1430. In 1930, the gatehouse on the south side was demolished to allow traffic to bypass the gate. The spot can still be seen on the tower. In 1981 the tower was renovated. The passage has been closed to car traffic since 2002.

The gate in art

The German-American painter Lyonel Feininger , who stayed in Ribnitz several times in the first half of the 20th century, made several works with the Rostock Gate as a motif. With his etching “The Gate” (1912) he created one of his key works. An original print has been in the possession of the city of Ribnitz-Damgarten since 2006.

Buildings

The Rostocker Tor is an almost square, four-storey brick gate tower with an ogival passage. The ground floor ends at the top with a frieze consisting of square panels with lancet - shaped quatrefoils . The two floors above are provided with five rows of ogival decorative panels on all sides. The upper row of panels is slightly smaller and slot-like openings can be seen in the first, third and fifth panels; these used to be used as loopholes . All four corners of the storey are crowned by pinnacles .

A special feature of the tower is the octagonal top floor above the pyramid-like roof. The floor itself has a pointed brick hood. Each side of the upper floor is provided with an ogival screen and a small loopholes inside.
