The red-blue Colombian ( Hyphessobrycon columbianus ) is a small freshwater fish from the family of the true tetras (Characidae). It lives in northwest Colombia , near the border with Panama and the Caribbean coast, in small, slow-flowing streams that flow into the Rio Acandi . The fish were first introduced to Germany as freshwater ornamental fish in 1995 and initially kept for members of the genus Astyanax . After being incorrectly identified as Hyphessobrycon ecuadoriensis , they were not scientifically described until 2002 .

The fish are seven centimeters long. Like most other species of the genus Hyphessobrycon , they are high-backed. The body is iridescent bluish in color, the fins are red. Your dorsal fin is supported by two undivided and nine divided fin rays. In the anal fin there are three undivided and 23 divided rays. The spine has 34 vertebrae . In the males the dorsal fin is slightly higher and the edge of the anal fin is more concave, in the females it is convex. The latter should also be a bit fuller.

Reproduction

The red-blue Colombian spawns in pairs or in small schools. The eggs are released into the free water. Depending on the condition of the females, 100 to 400 eggs are laid. The fry hatch after three days and swim free after five days. After a short time the red color of the fins appears, the blue color of the body begins on the back with a length of two centimeters.
